“Eyes may bug and jaws may drop at this Kansas City cat’s ability to play three parts on the same guitar at the same time, but the real seduction is in Dan Bliss’ voice.… This style of blues both soothes and riles in its collision of complex picking patterns and simple charm. It’s downright mesmerizing.”

“In the world of contemporary fingerpicking oriented blues players, Dan Bliss is a standout. …a diverse and entertaining repertoire that includes country blues influenced originals, complex rags and swinging jazzy interpretations from the Great American Songbook.… On top of all this he is a tasteful songwriter with a sensitive down home lyrical approach.”

“Seeded with narrative stories and instrumentals, one can hear echoes of Leon Redbone, Django Reinhart, Taj Mahal... Each performance is a mischievous delight. There is his ornery side-ways smile and just a hint of a nasal drawl infusing each tune with a muddy, crawfish authenticity.”

“This stellar record suggests that Bliss is aptly named, as his blend of jump blues, delta blues and swing should bring blues fans to ecstasy.… After spending years in the shadows, Bliss is more than ready for the spotlight.”

“Dan Bliss’s hands are at harmonious odds. His left hand pulls, holds and hammers strings on his acoustic guitar while his right maintains a steady picking rhythm. Together they create some of the best blues standards and originals heard around the Lawrence-Kansas City area.”

Updated FEBRUARY 2009:

2009 is off to an interesting start. I’m excited to be part of “KC GUITAR 4," a new project with three of my favorite Kansas City guitarists: ROD FLEEMAN, TOM DEMASTERS & BILL DYE (check out our MySpace page). We played our first show on February 3 to a packed house at Jardines Jazz Club and we’ll appear there again TUES, MAY 19th.

Here are a few other collaborations coming up that I’m really looking forward to:

SAT 3/7 - A rare acoustic duo gig with KC blues guitar great FAST JOHNNY RICKER at Mike Kelly’s Westsider.

SUN 3/22 - Folk Blues guitarist, singer, songwriter JOHN WALKER from Lincoln, NE joins me at Jazz Louisiana Kitchen. We’ll also play a couple of shows in Nebraska in April.

THURS 5/7 - I’ll be opening for TIM THOMPSON from Nashville at the Westport Coffee House. An innovative and versatile player with stunning technique and wonderful arrangements, Tim is the Walnut Valley Festival’s 2008 INTERNATIONAL FINGERSTYLE GUITAR CHAMPION. His show will include a set with his son Miles, a talented jazz violinist.  Guitar fans won’t want to miss this one.

SUN, 5/17 - ROD FLEEMAN joins my trio with ALLEN FISHELL (drums) and JIM DECKER (bass) at the Holy-Field Winery in Bashor, KS for the kickoff of their fifth annual Summer Jazz & Blues Concert Series hosted by DAVID BASSE.

2008 was a great year; the new CD was well received and the busy gig schedule included highlights such as the Kansas City Kansas Street Blues Fest, Bogart Music Festival, Coleman Hawkins Blues Festival in St. Joseph, Amelia Earhart Fest in Atchison, Art ala Carte in Salina, and a show with Australian guitarist Nick Charles at the Emma Chase in Cottonwood Falls.

A big thanks to all for the ongoing interest and support, you’re what keeps me going. I look forward to seeing you at the gigs!

The new CD is finally out! “THAT’S WHAT I’M HERE FOR” was released December 6th with a sold out show at The Mountain Music Shoppe in Shawnee, KS. The self produced disc features twelve new original songs performed solo, just me and an acoustic guitar. Two of the tunes were co-written with a couple of guitar playing buddies from back home in Upstate New York.

CDs are available here as well as in Kansas City at The Mountain Music Shoppe, Prospero’s Books on 39th Street, Borders Books & Music, and of course at all shows. Check out Present Magazine's review at www.presentmagazine.com

There were a lot of great gigs in ‘07. The summer was busy with area festivals and concerts including opening for MARCIA BALL at the Olathe Summer Concert Series. In addition to solo gigs, I played a number of shows with KC jazz guitar great ROD FLEEMAN as well as with my electric trio featuring ALLEN FISHELL on drums and JIM DECKER on bass.

In September I once again competed in the FINGERSTYLE GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIP at the WALNUT VALLEY FESTIVAL in Winfield, KS - a wonderful gathering of amazing fingerpickers from all over the United States, Canada and Japan. I once again had the honor of placing in the contest, coming in behind DON ALDER of British Cloumbia in 1st place and TIM THOMPSON from NASHVILLE,TN in 2nd place. Both are truly awesome musicians and very nice fellows. Along with the 3rd place trophy I was awarded another beautiful handmade GALLAGHER guitar and had the the pleasure of performing in the winners showcase on the Festival’s Main Stage.

Once again a big thanks to all who take the time to keep up with my schedule and make it out for the gigs. I sure couldn’t do it without you!
